Digital Collage

I use images in the public domain to make digital collages. I usually find pictures on the Rijksmuseum’s Rijksstudio or on Europeana.

‘Edinbird’ made with Fazant – 1759-1842 – Rijkmuseum, Netherlands – Public Domain; and Gezicht op Edinburgh Castle – 1753 – Rijksmuseum, Netherlands – Public Domain; and Portrait of a Woman – 1731 – Rijksmuseum, Netherlands – Public Domain.

What goes into an image

Here are a few examples that show how I use old images to create a new and compelling illustration.

Made with Journal des Dames et des Modes, Costume Parisien, 5 avril 1810, (1050): Pantalon de drap (…) – 1810 – Rijksmuseum, Netherlands – Public Domain; and A Bouquet – 1820 – Rijksmuseum, Netherlands – Public Domain.
Made with Grus carunculatus/Bugeranus carunculatus (Wattled crane) – 1777/1786 – Rijksmuseum, Netherlands – Public Domain; and Trekschuit – ca. 1830 – Rijksmuseum, Netherlands – Public Domain.
